19-Nortestosterone (also
named nandrolone) belongs to
the group of anabolic
androgenic steroids. In some
cases 19-nortestosterone is
a naturally occurring
compound (male pigs,
pregnant cows). The use of
growth promoters (e.g.
anabolics) in meat
production is banned in EC
since 1986. In the
19-Nortestosterone EIA an
antiserum is used showing
cross-reactivities with the
following compounds: 17ß-19-nortestosterone
(100%), 17a-19-nortesterone
(50%),
nortestosterone-sulphate
(100%),
19-nor-4-androstene-3,17-dione
(240%), norgestrel (16%) and
norethindrone (38%). The
dose-response curve shows a
measuring range for 17ß-19-nortestosterone
of 0.06-2.0 ng/ml. Large
amounts of urine samples can
be screened in a short time
for the presence of 17ß-19-nortestosterone
and its related compounds.
To reduce the influence of
other urine compounds a
solid phase extraction (C-18
Empore Extraction disk
Cartridges) is
recommended. Detection
limits down to 0.5 ng/ml can
be reached depending on the
sample preparation procedure
used.
