Adulterants are which should not be contained within other substances (eg. food, beverages etc.). Adulterants may be intentionally added to more expensive substances to increase quantities and reduce manufacturing costs, or for some other deceptive or malicious purpose. Adulterants may also be accidentally or unknowingly introduced into substances. The addition of adulterants is called adulteration. Bovine rennet whey is a low-priced by-product obtained during cheese production from cows’ milk and it may be used to adulterate high-priced milk products.
Allergens are normal proteins that occur in all kind of food products. Approximately 5% of children and 1-2% of adults are sensitive to food allergens. Food allergens provoke the immune system resulting in a range of reactions such as: anaphylaxis, atopic dermatitis and gastrointestinal or respiratory disorders.
